Dear friends and followers,

I am thrilled to share that my most recent project is nearing completion. Guided by my intimate interviews with sixteen families across the United States, I have woven together a one-of-a-kind collection of true stories that illustrate what happens when hearing loss is identified later in childhood, outside of newborn hearing screening. Such as when newborn screening safeguards fail or hearing loss develops later. Or when risk factors are overlooked, parent concerns are dismissed, and pediatric audiology services are difficult to access. Within this book, readers will have a chance to walk with parents as they face an avalanche of emotions, watching as their young children miss important developmental milestones. This collection will soon offer validation, compassion, and hope to families navigating the difficult journey of late-identification. Undergraduate and graduate programs and stakeholders will find valuable case studies for group discussion and for developing more effective and expanded early childhood hearing health monitoring and surveillance protocols.

OUR TARGET DATE OF PUBLICATION IS DURING LATE ONSET HEARING LOSS AWARENESS WEEK. MAY 4-10, 2026

If you would like to be kept informed or first in line to purchase a copy of the book from online retailers, then you’ll need to receive pre-launch information and pre-order details directly from me. I’ll need your email to do that.

This book is about to knock-your-socks-off, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

It’s been a year-long endeavor. Thank you for your support, enthusiasm, and desire to make the future bright for all children who are deaf or hard of hearing. They all deserve to be identified, connected quickly to options and services, and celebrated for who they are early.

Your partner in advocacy,

Valerie James Abbott
